Why should you read this book?
Relatable Characters:
One reason I recommend reading "The Lovely Bones" is because the Salmon family are relatable characters. Susie Salmon is a relatable character because she is a teenager trying to find her way in life. She relates to teenagers because she is also in love with a boy at her school, Ray Singh. Jack Salmon is also a relatable character. If a parent's child was murdered, they would have acted the same way as Jack; they would want to find the murder of their child, and give their child the justice they deserve. People can relate to the Salmon family because the family acts as if it was a divorced family. The parents are distant from each other. Many children can relate to the Salmon family because their parents are divorced. For example, when Lindsey finds the drawing of the corn field from Mr. Harvey's house, she asks her mom if she wants to see it. She says, "I don't know what to say. Your grandmother is here. I have shopping to do, a bird to cook. No one seems to realize that we have a family. We have a family, a family and a son, and I'm going" (Sebold 184-185). Susie's mother gets very upset whenever someone talks about Susie. She becomes distant from everyone to hide her feelings. Susie's mother moves away for a while because she cannot deal with the death of Susie and her husband constantly investigating Susie's case.

Topic Not Often Talked About:
Another reason I recommend reading "The Lovely Bones" is because the topic of death is not often talked about. Not a lot of books talk about death and what affect it has on a family, that is why I found it so interesting. Even though this story is fictional, this could actually happen to a family. Also, not a lot of people talk about death because it is dreary. In the novel, there was many positive events that came after Susie was gone. There were more connections between people after her death; "the connections-sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at a great cost, but often magnificent-that happened after I was gone"(Sebold 320). For example, her sister fell in love and got married. Her friends at school also became closer because of her death. This story made death a more hopeful. For example, the Salmon family always thought their daughter was alive even when the police said she would not be found alive.

The Point of View:
In addition to those reasons, I recommend reading "The Lovely Bones" because it is told from Susie's point of view. I find this book interesting because not only do we know what Susie is thinking, but we also see what she sees from heaven. Even though Susie is in heaven, we still get to see what is happening down on Earth. Susie also tells a story about her life even when other events are happening down on Earth. We as readers get to hear both sides of Susie's death. That is what makes the story so interesting.
